Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia Australia or also known as Indonesian Student Association of Australia was established on March 13, 1981 in Canberra, Australia. As one of the most prominent Indonesian student organisation in Australia, we have a purpose to serve and unite Indonesian students all across Australia. Additionally, we act as a medium of communication and interaction for all Indonesian students across Australia. Our goals are to establish a strong sense of fellowship among Indonesian students and provide contributions to the nation in terms of cultural recognition as a foreign community.
Representing over 20,000 Indonesian students in Australia, PPIA emphasises on creating positive and sustainable contribution toward the socio-economic development of Indonesia. Over the years, PPIA states (states-level PPIA) and PPIA branches (university-level PPIA) have never ceased to create impactful charity projects that focus on the development of Indonesia. This year, PPIA hopes to enhance the sense of togetherness in creating positive impacts by establishing a tribute to eastern Indonesia through improving quality of education for young children.
Our Charity Project Background
Our 2018 charity project aims to help improve children’s education in Eastern Indonesia, specifically in Papua and East Nusa Tenggara. We choose Eastern Indonesia as our project focus because Eastern Indonesia has potentials to be explored, yet currently it is widely regarded as one of the least developed regions in Indonesia. Data provided by the Indonesian Ministry of Villages, Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration demonstrates that 103 out of the 122 districts (84.42 percent) of the underdeveloped regions were located in Eastern Indonesia. Among the provinces in Eastern Indonesia, Papua and East Nusa Tenggara are chosen for the implementation of this project because both provinces cover the most underdeveloped areas among other provinces in Eastern Indonesia region. According to Presidential Regulation No. 131/2015, there are 25 regencies in Papua and 18 regencies in East Nusa Tenggara which fall under the category of underdeveloped regions. These facts make Papua and East Nusa Tenggara Province as two provinces with the most underdeveloped regions in Indonesia. The Indonesia Statistics in 2016 notes that the share of poor population is substantial in both provinces, encompassing 28.54 percent in Papua and 22.19 percent in East Nusa Tenggara. Meanwhile, in the infrastructure sector, the access to a reliable power supply, which is essential to engage in more lucrative economic activities, only covers 47 percent of total households in Papua and 74 percent in East Nusa Tenggara (Oxfam, 2014).
In education sector, the Indonesia Statistic also records that the mean years of schooling in both province is still low, settling at 7.02 years for East Nusa Tenggara and only 6.15 years for Papua. As comparison, the central government has mandated a compulsory education system up to 12 years, where people are required to attend school from year 1 to year 12 (high school level). The mean years of schooling is one of important indicators in measuring Human Development Index (HDI) of a country or a region. The higher the value of mean years of schooling of a region, the better the quality of its human resources. Therefore, the better its Human Development Index.
We believe that education is one of key means in the development efforts, by which produces better quality individuals and local future leaders who can break the poverty cycle and contribute to reap advancements to their communities. Hence, by directing our focus to prepare a positive and sustainable contribution on education in Eastern Indonesia, PPIA hopes that it will strengthen the impacts generated by education in remote areas in Eastern Indonesia.
The IMPACT Project
Our project is named IMPACT, which stands for “Improving Papua and East Nusa Tenggara’s Education”. Through this project, PPIA aims to deliver assistance to children in various communities in Papua and East Nusa Tenggara in the form of sustainable infrastructure aids such as: study tables, chairs, bookshelves and other educational facilities.
We believe that education is the cure to poverty. Built upon that belief, our vision is that through improving education for the children, we are creating future leaders to lead their generation out of poverty. Not only are we creating these great leaders but also educated followers that are necessary to keep stray them away from poverty. This is the long-term investment that we, as an organisation, have envisioned to occur in the near future of Papua and East Nusa Tenggara. The role of PPIA is to inform and spread the work of our campaign not only to fellow Indonesian students in Australia, but also to everyone in the world who cares about the improvement of the education for our young friends in Eastern Indonesia.
In the implementation of our project, we will deliver the educational aids to not-for-profit organisations which have learning centre(s) for children in Papua and East Nusa Tenggara. To select the beneficiaries, we worked closely with PPIA alumni who are currently in Papua and East Nusa Tenggara and have wide network with not-for-profit organisations back home. Hence, they can give us insights of which organisations urgently need help in terms of educational facilities in year 2018. We have shortlisted 5 beneficiaries who have strong vision in improving children’s education and have the needs that are aligned to our project aim. The 5 beneficiaries that have been selected for IMPACT Project 2018 are: Edufor Papua, KBLC (Jayapura & Yapen), Faimbari House, J-RUK, and Omikang. Each of these organisation has different needs, further details of the equipments can be seen in the Financial Details section.
To achieve our target, we have planned our operation as per below.
- PPIA partners with nonprofit organisations that have had previous experiences in social education and possess a strong vision to advance education level in Papua and East Nusa Tenggara areas. (Completed on October 2017)
- Gather the educational facilities-related needs of each organisation (Completed on October 2017)
- Raise funds through kitabisa.com and through partnership with companies (Ongoing)
- Procure the educational facilities
- Handover the items to beneficiaries
- Report the spending of the donation.
As part of this project, we also plan an inauguration where we will officiate the handover of the infrastructure aids. The event is planned as per below.

If the donation collected still has remaining funds upon completion of the procurement of the items above, we may add another organisation, who needs help on educational materials, to be our beneficiary.
However, if due to unforeseen circumstances adding a new beneficiary is not feasible, the remaining funds will be safely kept in PPIA account to support PPIA activities, but this will be the last resort.
